Recommended for ages 8-12,
“Grandmother Five Baskets” tells the
story of a modern-day twelve-year-old
Creek girl, Anna, and her journey to
maturity. Anna undertakes the
task of learning to weave traditional
Creek baskets from Grandmother Five
Baskets, an elder of her tribe. Anna
soon learns that the teaching process
involves making five separate baskets
and that she will learn much more than
basketmaking during this period in her
life. Anna, at first excited by the
opportunity to study with Grandmother
Five Baskets, encounters many
distractions along the way. She
persists, however, eventually
completing her five baskets. She also
learns far more important
lessons, those about herself.
Wonderfully illustrated with detailed
pencil drawings, “Grandmother Five
Baskets” would make a nice gift for any
young girl.
